Upon completion of the Practical Nursing Program, which includes both classroom and clinical experiences, the graduate will be able to:
- Interrelate basic scientific principles in administering safe nursing care to patients;
- Assess the basic mental, physical, emotional, spiritual and socio-cultural needs of well and ill clients;
- Demonstrate the necessary skills and adaptive abilities in administering patient care, utilizing the nursing process;
- Correlate information regarding the patients' needs, utilizing the nursing process;
- Accurately document and communicate findings within the health care team;
- Prioritize nursing care as it relates to client needs;
- Assist in the development of nursing care plans using established nursing diagnosis for clients with common, well-defined health problems;
- Competently provide nursing care according to accepted standards of practice and considering the dignity and privacy of clients and their families;
- Collaborate with members of the health care team to coordinate the delivery of nursing care;
- Refer patients and families to the appropriate community agencies, as indicated;
- Comply with scope of practice as stated in the nursing practice act of the Commonwealth of Virginia Board of Nursing;
- Describe the role of the licensed practical nurse in the delivery of health care;
- Understand the importance of seeking educational opportunities in order to grow personnally and professionally;
- Adhere to nursing code of ethics;
- Function as an advocate for the health care consumer;
- Comply with the Code of Virginia as it relates to nursing in the area of patient rights, prevention of patient abuse, neglect and abandonment;
- Constantly strive to improve personal performance through education and career mobility options.
