Currently Asher offers four (4) types of Medication Aide programs: 32 hours course;  68 hours course; 8 hours refresher course; 3 hoursrefresher course. (FOR MAT TRAINING FOR CHILD CARE FACILITIES - SELECT MAT)


32 hours course: (approved by State for GI Bill Benefits)

Using the curriculum approved by the Virginia Geriatric Education Center (VGEC) and Virginia Board of Nursing, this 32 hours Medication Management Training Program will prepare qualified employees to assist  with self-administration of medications in group homes for child/youth/teens (CRF) and adult homes/day centers (ADCC) licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Social Services Division of Licensing Program. Under the Drug Control Act of Virginia, Medication Aides are required to be trained in curriculum approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing before they may provide medication management services. WHO SHOULD ATTEND? Administrators, nurses aides and all direct care staff responsible for assisting residents with self-administration of medications in facilities licensed by the Virginia Department of Social Services Division of Licensed Programs.

68 hours course: (approved by State for GI Bill Benefits)

Using the curriculum approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing, this 68 hours Medication Management Training Program will prepare qualified employees to assist with self-administration of medication in assisted living facilities (ALF). WHO SHOULD ATTEND? Administrators, nurses aides and all direct care staff responsible for assisting residents with self-administration of medications in licensed assisted living facilities.

8 hours refresher course:

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
  1. Individuals who are registered as Medication Aides by the Virginia Department of Social Service and possess evidence of their registration and have one (1) year of experience working as a medication aide in an assisted living facility. This one (1) year experience must be prior to applying for registration and may only be accepted as evidence of training until July 1, 2008.  (This applies to medication aides that completed the 32 hour course prior to July 1, 2007, when the registration went into effect.) This individual can then take the eight-hour refresher course preparing a person to take the competency evaluations required for registration.  Or;

  2. Individuals who can provide documentation of successful completion of a 68 hour medication aide training program approved by the board in accordance with (18VAC90-60-90.) Or;

  3. Individuals who can provide documentation of  successful completion of a nursing education program preparing for registered nurse licensure or practical nurse licensure.


3 hours refresher course:

Using the curriculum approved by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Social Services expressly for review of medication management  task performance for medication aides, this course is a supplement to the Medication Management Training course required by the Drug Control Act in the Code of Virginia.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
  1. Individuals who possess their original 32 hours medication aide certificate and who assist with self-administration of medications in facilities licensed by the Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation, and Substance Abuse Services, the Department of Social Services, the Department of Juvenile Justice or the Department of Education.
